Stanford GSB Expanded Focus on Business and Sustainability

Bolstered by a partnership with Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, Stanford GSB increased support for resources catalyzing climate solutions.
Over the past few years, Stanford Graduate School of Business has stepped up its focus on sustainability, weaving it into new classes, faculty research, and impact-focused programs designed to address one of the world’s most challenging issues.
“Business has an incredibly important role to play in the transition to a low-carbon economy,” says Jonathan Levin, Stanford University president and former Stanford GSB dean. Stanford GSB is uniquely positioned to catalyze research and teaching into sustainability solutions, he says.
Initiatives for Climate Impact
In May 2023, Stanford GSB partnered with the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability (SDSS) to launch the Stanford Ecopreneurship program, established through the Benioff Ecopreneur Fund. The program helps students build sustainability-driven businesses across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.
The Stanford Initiative on Business and Environmental Sustainability (SIBES), a joint initiative between Stanford GSB and SDSS, has launched several new programs, including a faculty research conference series, a visitors program, and several sustainability working groups around the world.
Educating for the Future
Stanford GSB’s expanded curriculum includes courses like Climate Tech for Rapid Decarbonization and Public Policy for Climate Innovation. Executive education programs now offer sustainability strategy training for professionals.
These changes address students’ interests, too: the MBA/MS (E-IPER) joint Master of Science degree in Environment and Resources is one of the GSB’s most popular joint degrees.
Supporting Research-Driven Solutions
Faculty research is a major part of the GSB’s push. A new research fund supports sustainability-focused projects on topics such as food waste, semiconductor energy efficiency, and corporate social responsibility.
“Stanford GSB has always been a place where bold ideas are born,” Levin says. “We’re inspired by the opportunity to keep generating solutions in the sustainability space.”
